UK Air Guitar Championships 2009 - Final Night

Saturday 24th July 2010 History was made...

Alot of fresh meat turned up this year, the old has beens are getting on now but some of them still made it out for the regional heats... these people will never stop! Our tour took us all over the UK finding air guitars in abundance, out of our five regional heats we found some great talent... Unfortunately some of our regional winners couldn't make it to the final at the Garage, Islington. One got drunk and fell asleep in an actual garage, one experienced extremely turbulant 'Air' and had to turn back and another was an animal (we wish you well Mr. Bunny, Scottish Champion). The night kicked off with mega awesome band The WhyBirds, everyone limbered up to their tunes. Eddie Six Strings won the South England heat of the championships and booked her place into the final 8, she battled against mystro, The Barber Dodger and Juan Nightstand at the very end. Despite the new technology in the show (the infamous 'cheer'o'meter') the audience's reaction at the end of the final performance was overwhelming and we had a clear winner! Eddie Six Strings had never played an air guitar on a stage until a week before the final, she was nervous and shy, but as usual when the lights came up Eddie rose the occasion. We celebrate the first ever female UK Air Guitar Champion!

The Contestants

The Fret Dog

The Fret Dog

The Fret Dog is a first timer at the championships, despite little experience he put on a highly illuminating display of air guitar, the man known in the human world as Richard Cosgrove, came prepared, dressed to destroy, axe gleaming, for a newbie looked impressive but the crowd were not on board.
Eddie Six Strings

Eddie Six Strings

2010 UK Air Guitar Champion - Won the Brighton heat marginally and took a new found confidence to the London final. Effortlessly played out track upon track and tirelessly took the crown, on the subject of crown, Eddie also sicked on her friends head within minutes of recieving her trophy.. Rock n Roll
Juan NightStand

Juan NightStand

The winner of Best Dressed air guitarist by far, aka Jon Morales went for the air time, it was jumps galore, but unlike other air guitar contests ours has multiple rounds, not alot of energy left in reserve for the final, but he came in as runner up.
Glory

Glory

A 2009 contestant, Katie Leech returned this year armed with the lessons learned from the previous, unfortunately the level was so high this year that she never made it past round 1, but more learned this time again, we will have a serious contenter in 2011.
The Barber Dodger

The Barber Dodger

Azzedine 'The Barber Dodger' Hamouda, won this years Northern Ireland championships and came to London in search of bigger things. He convincingly made it to the semi final and got knocked out by Eddie Six Strings, great contestant and a worthy Irish champion.
Lady Murkin

Lady Murkin

Sam and Sally were an air duet, they atteded the Cardiff heat and on a technicality made it to the London final. With a barrel of laughs the girls tried their best, but it was not to be, UKAG has made good friends with this air duet.
Wellard

Wellard

Andy 'Wellard' Weller. This man know's when he's on to a good thing. This is his 4th year in the UK Air guitar championships finals and still has not made it out of the first round. He says 'I don't give a sh!t, i just love it'. And thats what its all about!
Mystro

Mystro

The rapper turned documentary maker signed up to find out what it was all about, for him it seemed to come naturally, great song choice in 'shot down in flames' AC/DC, his attitude was soaked up by the crowd and they put him through to round 2... Hope to see him again next year.
Dad Stag

Dad Stag

Missions to the moon have been simpler than the explaination of how this air band formed. Great energy and song choice, along with enough alcohol sink Arc Royal?!? They rocked, but the crowd thought that individually they lacked the balls to do it solo..
Duffy

Duffy

Michael Duffy - Welsh air guitar champion won the Cardiff heat without competition.. Twanga Joe tried to steal it from him, but on home turf there was no chance. Duffy nearly killed himself doing a stage dive and had to bow our early, a true champion, i would give even money for a UK win next year..
Sanctuary Steve

Sanctuary Steve

'Sanctuary' Steve Kennedy filled the OAR slot this year, the Old Age Rocker was a sharp dressed man and battled fiercely with Juan Nightstand. Sanctuary Steve was one of the runners up in the Brighton heat and we gave him a stab at the big time and he didn't let us down.
Ellie B The MC

Ellie B The MC

What can I say, she was utterly unprepared, unphased by the task in hand, yet accomplished crowd pleaser. Air guitar was a game she's played at before, round 2 for Ellie B.
Oscar de la Satan

Oscar de la Satan

The Alaskan dog racer and fashion designer was ace, in our view he had the credentials, but the crowd we're not quite sold on his performance and others only just beat him to the next round.
The Extinguisher

The Extinguisher

As a sceptical but overconfident person, The Extinguisher found himself wanting to show the world what air guitar was really about, unfortunately he left his air guitar at home and Guns'n'Roses were left without their Slash for his version of Sweet Child 'O' Mine.
Dom The Bomb

Dom The Bomb

A spitely young fellow, did well with a slightly camp performance and song, but showed form where it mattered and he moved in to the 2nd round all guns blazing.

Round by Round

First Round

Tragically Oscar de la Satan was cruely beaten by Juan Nightstand and Ellie B the MC. The Frett dog and Glory were squeezed out by a grumpy London crowd seeking blood. Wellard gave his all and after 4 years experience it was still not enough. Lady Murkin and Dad Stag were great fun but the crowd wanted performance! Mystro and Dom the Bomb progressed.

The Quarter Finals

This round brought in the regional heat winners mixed in with the online entries for knockout air duels. Firstly Brigton heat winner Eddie Six Strings v Mystro. Next we had the Northern Irish Champion The Barber Dodger v Dom the Bomb, then Welsh Champion Duffy v Ellie B the MC. Finally Juan Nightstand v Sancturary Steve

The Semi Finals

Only 4 left now and this is who they faced.. Juan NightStand v Ellie B the MC, unfortunately Ellie B was outclassed. The Barber Dodger v Eddie Six Strings, this was tough, a tight battle and so we award The Barber Dodger 3rd overall.

The Final

After hours of grueling stuff they had one last performance, both of them knowing what lies ahead, anticipation in their eyes and the fear of falling at the last hurdle they took to the stage once more. After 90 seconds of hellfire air guitar they waited for the crowds decision. This time we didn't need the clap'o'meter, the choice was clear.. Eddie Six Strings UKAG Champion 2010

h3>The Final Standings

1st. Eddie Six Strings

2nd. Juan NightStand

3rd. The Barber Dodger

The UKAG 2010 team, well done..
